Skill Levels

The Modeling kits available at the store range from basic to advance.  Depending on the manufacturer the item skill levels can range from 1-3, 1-4 or 1-5.  For modeling tools we have two major manufacturers available Zona or Excel.

Skill Level 1

Skill level 1 is the beginner skill level and require some very minor assembly. It is designed such that adults and children who have no prior modling experience will be able to assemble the kit on their first attempt.  A skill level 1 kit will rarely require painting or plastic cement they may have peal on decals.  Often assembling via screws or snaps.  However, please check the instructions on your kit for any additional material or tools that may be required.

We carry die-cast, pre-painted aircraft models and figures that are mostly completed but have some small parts that need attachment in this skill level.

A child starting in modeling shoud stay at this level for about a month or two, depending on how many models they work on. The basic idea of these models is to learn how things are assembled.

Skill Level 2

This level is recommended for those over the age of ten and our most popular skill level. These kits generally require basic plastic model assembly techniques, such as cutting parts from the tree, and cutting or sanding away the remains of the tree.   Most level 2 kits will have a minimum of cement or paint. The decals rather than being sticker will be water slide which will give a more realistic appearance.  To nicely complete a level 2 kit, you may want additional tools.

Tools that will be handy for Skill Level 2

  • plastic nippers (for cutting parts from the tree)
  • fine file, sandpaper or hobby knife (for cleaning the part)
  • Tweezers (applying decals)

Skill Level 3

These are traditional model kits that will require all the basic modeling skills to complete. This includes cutting parts from trees and trimming or sanding them prior to use, test fitting prior to final assembly, the use of cement to assemble the parts, and the use of paint to complete them.   Some parts in a skill level 3 kit will be smaller than in previous skill levels.  There will also be a greater quantity of parts.  These kit are not suitable for the inexperienced or small children with out adult supervision.

Tools that will be handy for Skill Level 3

  • All Skill Level 2 tools
  • various types of plastic cement (depending on plastic used in the kits, ask us for recommendations)
  • painting supplies  (oil or acrylic based paint, brushes, thinner, masking tape, gap-filling putty)
  • possibly decal softener for difficult to handle areas

Skill Level 4 - 5

At skill levels 4-5 you may mix paints to achieve the color you desire.  Materials will vary from part to part in the kit and you may need to modify the part to make it properly fit.  These kits are not suitable for small children and it is recommended that even experienced children under 14 years of age have adult assistance when assembling these kits.  Detailing will be required on both the interior and exterior of the model.
